Chapter 5: Lost in Lost and Foundland

When the tree stopped spinning, Angie was flung out of it. She saw herself sitting in front of a rock pillar. She looked around and discovered she was in a gold mine. She heard moles lighting dynamite sticks and throwing them at the walls.

“Wait, wait! You’ll never break any walls that way! Let me show you!”

The moles listened intently as she demonstrated to them how the walls could be broken.

“Thank you for the advice. My name is Alexander Burrotson, and we’ve been chucking our dynamite at these walls for… three years, I would say. We’ve wasted a lot of dynamite on these walls! We barely have any left! We’re not that smart, though, and to break the walls the way you do, you need lots of smarts.”

“I know. That’s why I’m doing it and not asking you to do it yourself.”

After 15 days, the railroad for the mining carts was cleared. The moles put Angie in a minecart with a hard hat and a bag of silver pawns, and sent her off.

When the minecart stopped with a bump on the barrier, Angie went out and was greeted by a colorful carnival. She saw an elephant practicing his balancing act nearby.

“Oh, hello there. Welcome to Fanfare Park! I’m Pacthy, and I’m just practicing my circus act while the customers aren’t around. Where is my master? Are these blocks new circus props?”

“Um, those aren’t circus props…”

“Well, then what ARE they, then?”

“They are walls. That’s why you don’t have customers. I bet that your circus master is trapped in one of them. I also bet that customers can’t come because of the walls.

“Oh, I see. How do you get them out of here?”

“Leave it to me.”

After 14 days, Angie freed the circus master and the other performers in the carnival. They gave her a pack of five fireworks as a gift.

Angie moved on and saw a strawberry farm being tended by squirrels. Angie looked around and saw how gigantic the strawberries were. A squirrel wearing a blue dress came up to her.

“Oh, hello, there. My name is Saffiel, and we farm strawberries in the Gnome Homes. However, we can’t deliver them to others because of the walls here.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll break them for you. Just a short question: Why are your strawberries so large?”

“Oh, it’s because of a potion stored in that gnome vessel.” Saffiel pointed to a gnome-shaped rock. “That gnome has been infused with magical energy for generations, and it can make plants grow spontaneously around it. These plants are then used to make the potion, which is then stored inside the gnome. When we need to refill our watering cans, we fill them halfway with water and then fill the rest with potion from the gnome. We water our strawberry plants with the mixture, and that makes them extremely large. We usually sell these strawberries as jam or sliced in packs, but if someone orders a whole strawberry, we have crates, ropes, harnesses and delivery birds for that.”

“I see. I’ll break these walls for you, but it may take a while.”

“Thank you very much! Here, I’ll give you a room in the quarters.”

After 16 days, Angie could move on to the haunted house just ahead of the strawberry farm. Saffiel gave her a pack of sliced strawberries to thank her for her efforts. She also sprayed Angie’s bags with a potion which could preserve any food or drink she put in it for up to two years, saying that its effects lasted forever.

Angie felt a spooky vibe as she walked the path leading to the house.

She saw a raven studying some poetry and reading it out of a scroll.

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
            Only this and nothing more.”

    Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow;—vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the lost Lenore—
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore—
            Nameless here for evermore.”

Angie was intrigued by what he was reading and asked: “What is that poem that you’re reading?”

“Ah, there is a visitor in my way

And I don’t know just what to say.

It’s just a poem I wrote, as you can see

And the subject? Why, it’s me!

My name is Lenore

And I will stay here for evermore,

Until my poem has some refine

And out of all literature it shall shine.”

“Oh, okay. You see, I want to break these walls so that I can move on. I didn’t expect any pet to live here. Can I sleep in your house?”

Lenore simply nodded and plucked a feather out of his wing. He dipped it in ink and continued writing on his scroll.

After 15 days, Angie bid goodbye to Lenore. He was still focused on his poem. He did not speak, but he plucked out another feather, took an inkwell from inside his house, and gave both items to Angie.

Angie was soon facing the sea. However, it didn’t take long until a sea turtle emerged from the water.

“Howdy there, my name’s Cody. I’m a pet shuttle, and you seem to have a problem.”

“I do. I need to rescue the pets from the walls, but the walls are underwater and I can’t swim.”

“No problem.”

He then swam away and returned with a boat.

“So, how can we break the walls?

“Just follow my lead.” Replied Angie. “I have a periscope.”

After 16 days, the walls had been cleared out.

“Hey, Angie, we are at Red Rock Ridge. It is considered territory of one of the pet tribes. They understand English, but they can’t speak it at all. They communicate through pictures, so I hope you’re good at charades. However, if you get stumped, I can help you. I’ve had more experience with them. They can also nod and shake their heads, so that means you can tell if you correctly interpreted their message.”

Angie stepped up to the eagle standing nearby. He was wearing a colorful headdress of feathers.

The eagle drew a large eagle on the rock and surrounded it with smaller eagles. He then drew an arrow from the large eagle pointing to himself.

“You’re the leader of the tribe?”

The eagle nodded before drawing a brick wall. He then drew eagle figures inside some of the bricks.

“The other eagles are trapped in the walls? I came here in the first place to free them.”

The eagle nodded and drew a figure of a cat. He then drew a teepee. He drew an arrow from the cat drawing pointing to the teepee drawing.

“I can sleep in that teepee over there?” Angie said, pointing to a nearby teepee.

The eagle nodded and stopped drawing. Angie guessed that he had finally relayed his message.

After 15 days, the eagle tribe was reunited. They all waved goodbye as Angie went to the next place.

Since there were more underwater walls, Cody helped her cross the sea until she could go back to land. As a reward, Cody gathered some silver pawns from a treasure chest underwater and gave it to her. Angie thanked him and moved on.

Angie saw a bulldog guarding some suitcases.

“Hey, these suitcases are royal property!”

“Royal property?”

“Since the last Pet Unity Conference, Queen Felicia is nowhere to be found! However, her suitcases were recovered and brought back on that boat over there.” He pointed to a small wooden ship.

“Who is Queen Felicia?”

“She’s the ruler of Lost and Foundland! How do you not know that?”

“I’m a farmer from Animal Kingdom, so I’m not that well-educated. Also, I’m here to break the walls.”

“Finally, someone who knows how to break these infuriating walls! I’m Alexander, and I’m a royal servant who’s supposed to bring these suitcases back to the castle. However, these walls prevent me from doing so.”

“I don’t want you to get your paws too dirty, so I’ll call you when I pave the way to the castle.”

After a fortnight, Angie cleared out a path to the next area.

“Angie, that is Party Pavilion, a place where members of royalty can host parties. If you don’t mind, the suitcases and I will stay there because there’s more food and water there.”
