Chapter 17: Sunsets in Sunset Sanctuary

In the jungle, two Rafflesia flowers release orange smoke, which swirls towards the middle and form a portal, from which Angie is ejected from. As Angie gets more sense of what just happened, a zebra walks towards her.

“Ah, it’s been a long time since the magical Rafflesias have functioned. I’m Zora, how may I help you?”

Angie blinked her eyes and she saw that a Zebra was talking to her. “I’m at the next world, right? What just happened, and how did I get here?”

“You are now at Sunset Sanctuary. Well, it may be a jungle jam here, but this is the only place with magically enhanced flowers. These Rafflesias have been treated with a potion that allows them to release pollen that creates portals. That’s how you got here. The potion is created by Queen Livida, who is also a mage. This water canteen doesn’t have any water in it, but instead it has some of the potion in it. The Rafflesias need to be watered with this potion every week and it also needs to be watered after it creates a portal. This keeps the Rafflesias from running out of magical energy.” Zora replied, while watering the Rafflesias with potion. Angie looked around and she saw large viridian leaves creating a path through the grass. There were also white and pink orchids growing right beside the Rafflesias.

In just 10 days, Angie was able to clear all the walls in the jungle. The fog cleared and revealed a quaint little barista run by a gray tarsier. Angie walked into the barista and sat down.

“Why, hello there.” The tarsier said, looking at Angie with bright green eyes. “I’m Arcelan, and even though I’m old, I can remember when customers came here every night for a cup of joe. I usually only open at night, given my nocturnal nature, so my customers are usually students and mages-in-training who want to stay up so they can study for upcoming tests. However, this is one of the hours of the day when I’m awake. As an elderly tarsier, I’ve always loved the lively company at my barista, but when the walls came down, my customers got trapped in them, and I’ve been alone and lonely for 5 years.”

“That’s kind of sad.” Angie said. “However, I can help you. I’ll clear out these walls for you!”

“Don’t you need my help, however? We are awake at different times, so is it okay for me not to help you?”

“Whether you decide to help me or not, I’ll still break the walls for you and all the other pets who go here!”

Over the course of 15 days, Angie broke each wall, sometimes paying for some coffee to stay awake as she tried to finish off a wall in the middle of the night. Arcelan generously gave a half-off discount for all of Angie’s coffee purchases, as the former knew that the latter had very good intentions for the former’s store.

When all the customers were gathered at the barista, Angie and Arcelan guided some of them through the Rafflesia portals, while those from places that were still blocked stayed.

“Look, Angie, since you’ll be pulling off a lot of all-nighters in your journey, have a tin of Arabica coffee beans. Best of luck.” Arcelan said as Angie walked up towards Coral Creek.

Coral Creek was a shallow pool filled with coral of all shapes and colors. Some were long red tendrils, others were brain-like lumps, some were clusters of white tube-like shapes, and some looked like several plates separated by cylinders. A fur seal wearing a dive mask, snorkel, and armbands dove into the water.

“Hello there!”

“Woah!” Angie exclaimed. “You surprised me!”

“Heh, sorry about that.” The seal said. “I’m Allen, and I’m not a mature seal yet. My parents were teaching me how to swim when they got trapped. If you were surprised by my swim gear, then now you know.”

“Well, I’m just here to break the walls.”

“The walls are the reason why my parents are trapped.”

“Don’t you worry, Allen. I’ll break those walls.” Angie assured.

A fortnight later, all the walls were cleared, and Allen was reunited with his parents.

Pink Paradise was a Zen Garden with stone lanterns and cherry blossom trees. A red-billed duck came up to her.

“Good morning, and welcome to Pink Paradise, the perfect place to meditate and balance your mind. What would you like to do?”

“I only want to break the walls.”

“Ah, yes.” The duck said. “Unfortunately, this place is no longer good for meditating because the walls are very distracting.”

“Um, alright then. I’ll just start breaking these walls now.”

17 days later, Angie was finally able to climb up all the way to the top of the stone stairs at Pink Paradise.

In Marble Mountain, there was a lioness in a toga. There was a golden laurel wreath adorning her head.

“Greetings. My name is Alida, and I train those from Mythical Meadow.”

“I’m not from Mythical Meadow…”

“Mythical Meadow is a kingdom, not very far from here. That kingdom is the source of all the magic that exists in the Pet World. Marble Mountain serves as a school for young citizens of Mythical Meadow. Here, they are taught what is taught in normal schools, but we also teach them how to control and harness their powers for good. Each pet who studies there needs a counselor who they can talk to about anything, if they need trouble. The counselor also keeps track of their powers as they go through the schoolyear. I am the counselor of some of the students who have the power to manipulate electricity. However, this school has since been closed because of the walls. When the walls came down, the other counselors and I encouraged the students to use their powers on them. However, nothing they did would break the walls. Instead, every attempt resulted in them getting trapped in the wall they were targeting.”

“Magic isn’t needed to break the walls.” Angie said, before breaking a wall in front of Alida to prove the former’s point.

16 days later, all the students of Marble Mountain had been freed, and they all thanked her with a theatrical showcase of their powers, which amazed Angie. She climbed down another set of stairs to the Forgotten Lands.

The Forgotten Lands was a floating island with a gargantuan windmill and several quaint cottages. There was a llama with a blue cape waiting for Angie.

“Good afternoon, and welcome to Forgotten Lands. Many people forget about it because it’s high up in the clouds, but the fact that it’s so secluded is what attracts pets to it. Since it’s so windy up high, this entire place is powered by this windmill here.”

“I’m only here to break the walls.”

“Some of us have tried to break them, but without success. However, for some reason, I believe in you. I’ll let you stay at my house. My name is Fenna, by the way.”

Fenna’s house was a simple white house with orange doors, windows, and roof. Angie could notice that the rugs and pillows were all woven in neutral colors.

Fenna’s House.

“Wow. I just noticed that the rugs and pillows are all woven. Who made those things?”

“Oh, I made them myself.” Fenna replied. “I shear myself every now and then, and I use my hairs to weave those. My cape is woven too, but I dyed the yarns before weaving them. The guest room’s this way.”

The next day, Fenna served Angie a plate of lichens and grass, only to realize that the latter doesn’t eat that kind of food. Angie prepared her own meals from her food supply instead.

After 2 weeks, Angie was ready to go to Cloud City.

“You’re a good person, I know that because you never gave up on breaking those walls.” Fenna said. “However, you may have to do a lot of convincing to get our ruler to trust you. She’s a great mage, and if she sees that you have vile intentions, she will cast a spell using her Crystal of Unity and drive you out. Bring a gift with you just to be safe.”

“Don’t worry.” Angie replied. “I’ve got one.” She brought out her flask of treeflower juice (see Chapter 14) and crossed the paper-lined bridge leading to the castle in the tree.
