Chapter 16: Welcome to Rabbit’s Road

“Greetings, young feline. How do you do? Welcome to Rabbit’s Road.” A vulture wearing a blue puffy gown said in a subtle Russian accent.

“I’m Angie, and I’m doing well, thank you. What exactly is this place?”

“I presume you know Party Pavilion, right? It’s back in Lost and Foundland.

“Yes, I do know that place. Is this place anything like Party Pavilion?”

“Yes, indeed, as both are rentable places for organizing parties that provide food catering as well. However, while Party Pavilion is more customizable, Rabbit’s road is more for whimsical-themed parties, formal tea parties, royal garden parties. It’s more expensive to rent, and farther away for some. Our features and services include buffet catering, gown and tuxedo rental, croquet, card games along with dealers to help you with them, toadstool-shaped tables, and many other facilities that I’m sure you’ll find to your liking. Unfortunately, we decided to close it 5 years ago, because the walls ruin the experience.”

“I’ll break the walls for you, as long as you don’t make me wear a gown while I do it.”

“Oh, in normal circumstances, you need to pay money for that, so no gown for you.”

15 days later, the brick road had been cleared, but Angie had been told that Rabbit’s Road doesn’t end here.

“Ah, yes. This is our giant chess board. Normally, customers can play it, but every year, the Pawns Gauntlet is held. Kingdoms send their best chess players in, and they pit against each other until a champion is found. It is one of the most exciting events here, and spectators pay up to watch it. Some matches are so intense, they take days to finish! Ah, it looks like there’s a contestant here.” The vulture pointed to a spectacled parrot.

“Hello there, I’m Okala, hailing from Mount Tiki in Fantastic Frontier. I must say, these walls are harder than any chess game I’ve ever played, including the one stopped by the coming of the walls. You can see here that some of the board pieces have been moved.”

“I’m Angie, and I agree that these walls are hard, but if we work together, we might just might be able to do this!”

Angie and Okala were quite a formidable team against the walls. The skills she developed over her journey were combined with Okala’s strategic skills from chess, resulting in the walls being broken in only 9 days.

The other contestants were free, and the Pawns Gauntlet could continue after 5 years. However, there was still a commotion, for many of the contestants could not get home because of the walls.

“Hmm,” The vulture thought. “That tournament sure is exciting to watch. However, I must help you, Angie, for you are obviously not acquainted with this place at all. Welcome to Garden Grove. This is where we usually set up croquet.”

An elderly turtle ambled over and said hello.

“Oh, ignore him.” The vulture said. “He always tries to mingle with the visitors, but I always tell our customers not to speak to him.”

Angie ignored her and spoke to the turtle. She soon learned that his name was Ronan.

“Wow…” Ronan said. “It’s the first time someone has talked to me in a long time. I tend to this place, you see. I trim the plants, polish the pillars, sweep any dust off the gazebo, things like that.”

At first, he thought Angie was overconfident for saying she could break the walls. However, when she saw that she really could, but struggled to do so, he helped by lending Angie his mesh cutter to cut mesh and vines on blocks when she needed it.

In 11 days, the garden was completely wall-free.

“Alright, you plucky little cat. Here, have my other mesh cutter. I promise that it will serve you well. Now, all you have to do is stand in this gazebo.” Angie did so. Ronan went to the stone bridge and turned the square knobs on each pillar until they clicked, exposing a secret compartment holding an orange topaz inside each of them. The gemstone’s light activated the spike on top of the gazebo, causing it to spin. An orange portal suddenly opened below Angie and swallowed her.

The gazebo where Ronan asks Angie to stand in.
The stone bridge in Garden Grove. The knobs on the pillars are turned to activate a portal leading to the next kingdom.
The spike on top of the gazebo which spins right before activating the portal.
